As part of efforts towards combating the effects of climate change, Plateau State Commissioner for Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development, Hon. Peter Kanang Gwom has visited Shendam Local Government Area to assess the level of flooding that has claimed lives and damaged farm lands in the locality.
The Commissioner, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary and some directors of the Ministry, was received by the Chairman of Shendam Local Government Area, Dr. Nicholas Kemi Nshe in his office.
Hon. Peter Gwom stated that the visit followed the flooding that caused havoc to some communities in the locality even as it aimed to mitigate the impact as well as forestall reoccurrence.
He reiterated that the effects of climate change can not be over emphasize because, according to him, the situation is getting worse.
Gwom expressed his condolences to the people of Shendam Local Government Area over the loss of lives, building collapse, and destruction of farm produce as a result of the flood.
The Commissioner gave the assurance that Governor Caleb Mutfwang is willing to come to their aid, noting that the governor is concerned about the well-being of the people of Plateau State.
Speaking further, the commissioner said the primary objective of the visit was to have first-hand information, ascertain the level of the destruction caused by the flood, and report back to the governor for necessary action.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Chairman of Shendam Local Government Area, Hon. Nicholas Kemi Nshe appreciated the commissioner and his team for the show of love and sympathy to the people of the local government over the unfortunate incident.
The Chairman said he was delighted with the coming of the commissioner and his team to see things for themselves and promised to partner with the Ministry to seek ways of addressing the effects of climate change on the locality.
Dr. Kemi pointed out that the communities mostly affected were Shimankar, Menka’at, Kalong, Ungwan Rina, and Ungwan Dadi, amongst others.
The Commissioner and his team were later taken round the Shimankar Menka’at community by the chairman to have an idea of the extent of the flood.
The team also visited the Long Menka’at, HRH Miskoom Maurice Manu Danjuma III to pay their respects.
