A Beacon of Hope and Justice Who Transcended Borders

In the hearts of many, today is a day of mixed emotions—one of mourning and profound celebration. I can’t but to salute and remember the Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr., who passed peacefully at the age of 84, a leading African-American voice reverberating across the globe.
His life was a magnificent design woven with threads of courage, compassion, and relentless advocacy. Reverend Jackson’s influence reached far beyond the shores of America; it touched nations, including Nigeria, with an unwavering commitment to justice and equality.
A Personal Reflection
I had the extraordinary honor of meeting Reverend Jackson twice, each encounter facilitated by our late, revered legend, His Eminence Dr. Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, OFR, CON.
During our first meeting in the U.S. under President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, I found not just an iconic civil-rights leader but a diplomatic powerhouse dedicated to Nigeria’s growth. With his characteristic warmth and strategic acumen, he opened doors that had long been shut, personally connecting us with the Congressional Black Caucus. He understood, as few others did, that the struggles of Black people are interconnected across the globe, advocating for Nigeria’s rightful place in this narrative.
A Sacred Visit to Nigeria
Our second meeting was equally memorable. Reverend Jackson traveled to Nigeria to celebrate Chief Clark’s birthday, yet he turned that joyous occasion into a diplomatic mission: advancing the interests of Nigeria, building lasting friendships, and strengthening bonds that endure to this day.
One particular conversation etched itself in my memory. When I recounted witnessing his tears on the night of Barack Obama’s election victory in 2008, his eyes glistened once more. He spoke poignantly of the long, arduous journey through Black history and the transformative power of media. “Master the narrative,” he urged, “and your own sunrise will come.” Those words ignited a passion in me that drove me to pursue a course in Politics and Media at prestigious Harvard University; a direct result of that profound exchange.
A Lasting Impact
Reverend Jackson embodied hope, bridging the painful past with a promising future. His tears that night were not solely for America; they resonated for every dreamer across Africa. In sharing his story, he planted seeds of inspiration that continue to flourish.
As we honor his noble spirit, we do so with hearts full of gratitude. Reverend Jackson, you have run your race, kept the faith, and fought the good fight.
Rest now, beloved servant of justice. Your light continues to shine brightly—in Nigeria, in America, and across the Black world.
