The Executive Chairman of Langtang North Local Government Area, Hon. Pirfa Jingfa Tyem, has initiated the production of barley in Nwur District, marking another significant milestone in his administration’s commitment to agricultural development, food security, and economic growth.
As part of ongoing monitoring of the initiative, the Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Hon. Bwaichak Wapzhi, led a field visitation and assessment of the crop’s performance. He was accompanied by Hon. Black Ntyem, former PDP Chairman in the Local Government Area and Coordinator of the Barley Production Programme in Langtang North.
During the visit, Hon. Bwaichak underscored the importance of barley as a versatile cereal crop in the grass family, with multiple uses in food production such as soups, bread, and health foods as well as in beverages including beer and whiskey. He noted that the crop has strong economic value and the potential to improve household income for farmers across the LGA.
The supervisory councillor commended the Executive Chairman for his forward-thinking leadership, describing the barley initiative as the second major investor-driven project facilitated by the Tyem administration. He recalled that the first was the attraction of investors to the iron ore mining site in Gazum, a development that has opened new economic prospects for the area.
Hon. Bwaichak also praised the efforts of Hon. Black Ntyem for effectively coordinating farmers in the zone to embrace barley cultivation, despite the challenges associated with introducing a new crop. He explained that barley is a hardy and climate-resilient crop, well suited to dry environments, making it critical for sustainable agriculture and long-term food security.
Expressing optimism, he stated that preliminary observations from the fields indicate that the first cycle of barley production in Langtang North is expected to record a good yield, laying the foundation for expansion in subsequent planting seasons.
