The Executive Chairman of Mikang Local Government Council, Hon. Dr. Benard Soepding Alkali, FCA, has reaffirmed that unity, visionary leadership, and effective collaboration among political stakeholders remain the foundation for accelerated development across Plateau State.
Dr. Benard made this known on Monday while featuring as the guest speaker on “Echoes of the Plateau Dream,” a live public affairs programme broadcast on the Plateau Radio Television Corporation (PRTV) and Peace FM 90.5.
Speaking on the topic, “Plateau United for Progress: Can Unity Transform Local Governance in the State?”, the Chairman described the current political landscape as a strategic advantage for Plateau State, noting that the alignment of the state with the Federal Government presents unprecedented opportunities for socio-economic growth.
He observed that with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, working within the same political family, Plateau State is well-positioned to attract greater federal attention, investments, and developmental interventions.
Dr. Benard, however maintained that political advantage alone cannot deliver development without unity among leaders and citizens. He stressed that while differences of opinion are natural in every political setting, the collective interest of the people must always supersede personal and partisan considerations.
The Chairman also used the opportunity to clarify public misconceptions surrounding local government finances. He explained that contrary to widespread assumptions, statutory allocations received by local governments are largely committed to recurrent expenditures, including the payment of salaries, administrative costs, and other statutory obligations.
Despite these financial commitments, he noted that the Mikang Local Government Council has continued to execute impactful projects across communities, demonstrating prudent management of available resources and an unwavering commitment to grassroots development.
Speaking on intergovernmental relations, Dr. Benard disclosed that Plateau State currently provides the highest level of financial support to local governments among the northern states, describing the initiative as a clear demonstration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s commitment to strengthening local governance and bringing development closer to the people.
The Chairman commended Governor Mutfwang for creating an enabling environment that allows local government councils to undertake people-oriented projects capable of improving livelihoods across rural communities.
Responding to criticisms that the present administration has not delivered meaningful development, Dr. Benard dismissed such claims as unfounded. He argued that many of the critics rely on assumptions rather than verifiable facts, urging citizens to assess government performance through evidence on the ground.
As an example, he cited the ongoing Lifidi–Piapung–Baltip road construction project in Mikang Local Government Area, describing it as one of several strategic infrastructure projects currently transforming rural communities across Plateau State.
He called on Plateau citizens to continue supporting the government’s development agenda through unity, peaceful coexistence, and constructive engagement, expressing optimism that sustained collaboration among leaders and the people would position the state for greater progress in the years ahead.
