The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed its determination to transform the party into a robust, enduring democratic institution rather than a transient vehicle for individual ambitions.
In a set of far-reaching resolutions from its second meeting, the party leadership outlined concrete measures aimed at strengthening internal governance, enforcing discipline, and ensuring long-term sustainability. These decisions signal a deliberate shift towards institutional maturity, party supremacy, and accountability—key ingredients for building a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Central to the resolutions is an uncompromising commitment to party supremacy. The NDC declared that all programs, policies, and appointments (except personal staff) by governments elected on its platform must be made in full consultation with the party’s established structures. This principle underscores that elected officials serve as representatives of the party’s collective will, not independent power centers.
“The party remains supreme,” the resolutions state, “and members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party.” This directive aims to curb the culture of individualism that has plagued many Nigerian political parties, where officeholders often prioritize personal or factional interests over the broader organizational goals.
The party further emphasized that it is being deliberately built as a lasting institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded after elections. Members at all levels are encouraged to demonstrate commitment to the party’s growth and sustainability across generations. For candidates and aspirants, total allegiance must be to the party and the national interest at all times.
In a move to eliminate parallel structures, the NEC resolved that all affiliated groups and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) operating under the NDC banner must function strictly under the guidance and control of the party. Such bodies shall no longer operate independently or in parallel with the official party structure. This resolution seeks to streamline operations, prevent fragmentation, and ensure unified messaging and strategy.
To entrench ethical standards, the party has mandated the establishment of a comprehensive Code of Conduct for all party officials and candidates. A dedicated committee, chaired by the National Legal Adviser, has been constituted to develop the framework and detailed guidelines. This initiative is expected to promote transparency, integrity, and accountability across the board.
Complementing this is the inauguration of a National Reconciliation Committee, tasked with addressing grievances and healing divisions among party members. The move demonstrates the NDC’s recognition that internal cohesion is essential for institutional strength and electoral success.
The resolutions place strong emphasis on financial discipline. The party will enforce strict accountability in the management of all resources by its officers, with party funds used exclusively for party business.
For candidates and aspirants, the rules are equally stringent. All monies sourced at various levels, as well as contributions made to campaign accounts, must be fully disclosed to the party at the appropriate tiers – local government, state, zonal, and national. Such funds are required to be received through dedicated party campaign accounts, including the presidential and governorship campaign accounts where applicable.
This framework is designed to eliminate opacity, reduce opportunities for abuse, and build public confidence in the party’s financial integrity.
These second NEC resolutions collectively represent a bold institutionalization agenda for the NDC. By prioritizing structure over personalities, accountability over expediency, and unity over factionalism, the party is positioning itself as a disciplined and forward-looking organization capable of delivering good governance.
As Nigeria approaches future electoral cycles, the NDC’s leadership appears determined to move beyond ad-hoc arrangements and build a party that can withstand leadership transitions and deliver on its promises to the electorate.
