Cautions well meaning good Samaritans

The Child Protection Network (CPN) in Plateau state has expressed deep concern over the case of Bethel fondly called Kawa, a 5-year-old girl whose image and identity was recently shared online by a lady who is said to be her “manager.”

CPN in a statement made available to reporters in Jos on Friday lamented that “This individual, had no legal custody or guardianship rights over Kawa and acted without adherence to child protection protocols.”

With intentions to “help,” the manager created a social media presence for Kawa, which rapidly gained attention, Unfortunately, this public exposure subjected her to scrutiny and potential exploitation, resulting in the current public outcry.

Mrs Sandra Chikan, the Plateau State coordinator of child protection network in the statement reads that
This situation constitutes a serious child protection violation on multiple grounds as well as Violation of Privacy and Dignity:

The statement further reads that “Posting a child online without parental or guardian consent undermines her rights and exposes her to risks of grooming, abuse, and trafficking.”

The organisation also raised concerns over the absence of Legal Custody as only parents, court-appointed guardians, or legally recognized caregivers may make decisions on behalf of a child.

They added that their is the risk of Child Labour and Exploitation as acting as a “manager” raises concerns of using the child for social or financial gain, regardless of intent.

” Also we believe that their is a Breach of the Best Interest Principle as the child’s best interest was not prioritized in this case.”

The statement also added that the Child Protection Network urgently calls for the Immediate Safeguarding of Kawa

We call on the Ministry of Women Affairs to assign a case Manager and convene a case conference to develop a proper care plan with follow-up for her .

” Individuals or groups without legal custody must not assume authority over children under the guise of “management” or “assistance.”

Child protection Network added that on the aspect of online Accountability , Social media platforms should promptly review exploitative content involving children and ensure they are removed.

On Community Vigilance , we call on Citizens to report suspected cases of child exploitation both offline and online.

Government should continue to prioritize the empowerment and support of Vulnerable families to prevent the exploitation of their children.

The Child Protection Network (CPN) strongly condemns any form of child exploitation, helping a child must never translate into managing or showcasing them for personal benefit.

Every child deserves safety, dignity, and the freedom to enjoy their childhood.

We call on all stakeholders, authorities, and the public to act decisively to protect Kawa and to work with us to strengthen child protection systems across our state.

If you suspect child abuse or a violation of child rights in Plateau state, please report it immediately! Call our helpline at:

Thank you so much for being proactive, when I began to watch the Kawa matter, I thought all protocols were observed by the said Manager, little did I perceived that it was not so, she should have seek guidance or advice from CPN or the court of Law on how to go about there relationship and her intent, however she had brought the matter to lime light in good faith,. Kudos to CPN PLATEAU
